The South African student movement was an integral feature in the struggle against apartheid and the attainment of democracy and social justice. SASCO and COSAS, collectively named the Progressive Student Movement, have since the late seventies distinguished themselves as leading organisations within the student movement, and have produced many of the current leaders in government and business.
Throughout the pre-democracy period, the Progressive Student Movement received support, both financial and otherwise, from sections of the international community that were sympathetic to their cause. With the advent of democracy, the Progressive Student Movement took a strategic position to actively seek opportunities within the new political dispensation in order to further advance their historical mandate of equity, access and redress within the education landscape and beyond.
Bokamoso Barona Trust has thus become a potent vehicle aimed at advancing the interests of students and youth in general.
